CRAFTED LIVING

Crafted Living is a thoughtful adaptive reuse project that transforms an underutilised commercial building in Melbourne’s CBD into a vibrant mixed-use development that supports both residential living and creative enterprise. In response to Victoria’s housing crisis and the growing demand for accessible, affordable workspaces, the project provides flexible housing specifically tailored for small business owners, artists, and craftspeople working in industries such as fashion, textiles, and jewellery.

By retaining the original structure, the design minimises material waste while reconfiguring the interiors to accommodate private dwellings with integrated workspaces. Each residence allows occupants to seamlessly balance living and working in one place, making it ideal for individuals whose livelihoods depend on studio-based practices. In addition to private units, the project introduces shared facilities—including a tool library, repair café, communal kitchens, laundry areas, and informal gathering spaces—designed to foster a strong sense of community and encourage collaboration among residents.

Public-facing spaces such as communal shops and display areas invite interaction with the broader neighbourhood, allowing residents to exhibit and sell their work, supporting a micro-economy within the building. Inspired by the site’s history of trade and craftsmanship, Crafted Living reimagines contemporary urban living as an integrated, community-focused model that supports creativity, entrepreneurship, and social connection—right in the heart of Melbourne’s evolving cityscape.
